Freshwater students making a difference on two continents -
Australia & Africa
Since August 2004 students and staff at Freshwater Senior Campus have been supporting the Hanga Vocational Training Centre in Tanzania, East Africa. Brian Leonard, the former Principal of FSC was accompanying a group of FSC students to their sister school in Austria and met Prior Fulgence Mluwili, Principal of Hanga VTC. He was inspired by Prior Fulgence’s account of what he was trying to achieve in Tanzania
What is the Hanga Vocational Training Centre?

Hanga VTC is a boarding school for young men and women, run by Benedictine monks. It began in 1979 with only two students in a masonry class. Girls have been admitted since 2002. Current enrolment is 85 and 13 teachers.
The students at Hanga VTC come from very poor families, from small villages in south west Tanzania.
FSC Tanzania Project has led to the supply of 8 laptops, laser printer, router, cabling, satelite dish and the committment to the internet provider of $5000 annually. Total funding so far - $41,000. We believe that there is no other state school that has made such a large committment to help others.
Hanga VTC students will be learning to use this technology. They will have access to the world wide web and the potential to access units of work relevant to the courses they are studying. FSC students will remain involved through the operation of a ‘help desk’ which will contribute to their communication and problem solving skills.
This project has had support from the wider Northern Beaches community. Harbord Diggers has supported the project and their past president, Hugh Tighe, made a generous personal donation of $24,000 and TAFE students have provided an additional 2 computers.
In 2009/10 the school is funding with the generous support of BP Solar another project to supply a reliable power supply to the small village hospital. It is also hoped that we will be able to bring Prior Mluwili to Australia later this year.
